Uroplatus sameiti
—
Southeastern Lowland Leaf-tailed Gecko
The relationship between this species and Uroplatus sikorae is tricky. Once upon a time these geckos were considered a subspecies, Uroplatus sikorae sameiti, with the main distinguishing factor being that Uroplatus sikorae sikorae had black lining inside its mouth but U. s. sameiti did not. A later study promoted Uroplatus sameiti to its own species, maintaining the black-vs-pink mouth lining distinction and adding some genetic differences. Since then there is some evidence that the mouth lining color does not map cleanly to the species boundary, and also that there might be more than two closely related species that need further studies before their relationships can be clarified.
So anyway, for now I am calling these Uroplatus sameiti because we got them all to open their mouths and verified that there was no black lining, only pink.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this 2023 trip to Madagascar.
