Pseudophilautus popularis
—
Common Shrub Frog
All of the frogs shown here (and most of the other frogs I saw in Sri Lanka) were identified as Pseudophilautus popularis by my guide Udaya Chanaka, who knows his Sri Lankan frogs very well. Some of them were identified in the field, and some afterwards from photos. In some cases I might have misunderstood what he said in the field, or misinterpreted my own notes later. I bring this all up only because this first one seems to have a significantly blunter snout than the others (and than most of the photos ID'ed as P. popularis on the web), leading me to believe that it might be some other species. Please let me know if you have some other candidate Pseudophilautus species that seems like a better match.
Different calling male, from the side. Calling photos are the gold standard of frog photos, but I only managed to get such photos from this species of Pseudophilautus and one other.
