Metlapilcoatlus mexicanus
—
Central American Jumping Pit Viper
This species has bounced around taxonomically through genera Atropos, Bothriechis, Bothrops, Atropoides, and Porthidium, before landing (for how long?) in Metlapilcoatlus in 2019. It was formerly considered part of Atropoides nummifer before being split in 2006.

Cute little guys! We found two of these after midnight within a few feet of each other. They gave us the evil eye, but no jumping occurred.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this trip to Guatemala.

The next night we found another, this time before midnight. We realized it was suspiciously close to the two we had seen the previous night, and concluded that it was in fact one of the same two individuals. We looked for the other one but failed to find it.
