Salmon-bellied Racer
Trail from Esquinas Rainforest Lodge, Golfito region, Puntarenas province, Costa Rica—September 26, 2001

We found this snake by day in the rainforest, and captured it for later photos. This is a young snake, with a very different pattern and coloration than the adults have.
This snake was photographed on a herping trip with GreenTracks. Here is a complete list of the species we found on this GreenTracks trip.

We found two more of these snakes a couple of days later. The largest one was in the process of eating a large ameiva lizard. This one was a little smaller, but still an adult. For the story (with pictures!) of how it chose to bite our trip leader, read my account of this trip.

One of the workers at our lodge told us he had seen a snake go under a rock a few minutes earlier. When we followed him to that spot, we saw the snake's head peeking out from a small gap in a wall of overgrown rocks. It got spooked and pulled back, but an hour or so later we went by again and this time the snake was coiled up in front of the rock wall.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this trip to Guatemala.
