Liophidium chabaudi
—
Toliara Smooth Snake
We were lucky that José found this snake on our night hike, because it is rarely seen. The Authority says "Known from few specimens from the arid west." and "L. chabaudi has a remarkable pointed headed profile, suggesting that it is probably a sand burrower." There was no "probably" about this one, which wanted nothing more than it wanted to dive down and disappear into the sand.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this 2023 trip to Madagascar.
