Gekko smithii
—
Smith’s Green-eyed Gecko
Also known as:
Smith’s Gecko, Large Forest Gecko, Forest Gecko
My guide Kurt "Orion" G knew exactly where to look for these impressively huge geckos with their mesmerizing emerald-green eyes. This one looks like it is smiling or making pleasant chit-chat, but really it is opening its mouth in order to lick off its (right) eye. Geckos are wont to lick their eyes because they lack eyelids and they have to keep that eye surface clean somehow.
My Travelogues and Trip Lists page includes a complete list of the herps I saw in the wild on this trip to Malaysia, as well as a travelogue of the trip.
