Coniophanes piceivittis
—
Sooty Black-striped Snake
Also known as:
Cope’s Striped Snake

Coniophanes are rear-fanged, with mild venom that can lead to localized swelling and pain if they bite you. Fortunately, they aren't very bitey, and this one made no attempt to bite my guide Fred or me. Guatemala is home to several species of Coniophanes, with differences in stripe pattern and scale counts. We also saw Coniophanes fissidens elsewhere, but that one disappeared into the leaf litter without being photographed.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this trip to Guatemala.
