Crocodylus palustris
—
Mugger Crocodile
Also known as:
Marsh Crocodile
Sri Lanka has two species of crocodiles. Despite their ominous dark-alley-in-New-York name, Mugger Crocodiles are the ones people have to worry about less. The other species, Saltwater Crocodiles, are considerably larger and more likely to chomp on humans. I didn't see any of those on this trip, but I have seen them in Australia and Malaysia.
We saw quite a few of these in Yala National Park. Most of them were at the river's edge, and would slip into the water if they noticed me getting even remotely near. How am I supposed to get the dramatic photo of a crocodile with mouth open lunging straight at me? Jeez.
