Brookesia thieli

Domergue’s Leaf Chameleon
On my first two trips to Madagascar, I saw a total of eleven Brookesia individuals. On this trip, I saw seven on my first night, thanks in large part to the excellent lizard-spotting skills of José Vieira and the local guides.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this 2023 trip to Madagascar.
And the next day we saw five more, thus surpassing in two days my Brookesia count for the entire 2007 trip. The first two here are particularly good finds because they were noticed (by the local guides) during the day. At night their bodies will reflect a flashlight beam in a way that makes them stand out a bit from the background, but by day you just have to recognize the tiny chameleon shape or texture.
Brookesia chameleons are so cool that every time I see one, I think "Brookesia chameleons are so cool".
